Caution against the use of Tobradex (which contains steroids) without being seen by an ophthalmologist. In cases due to a viral infection, use of steroids may cause blindness.

Sorry to sound like a smart @ss but better consult an eye doctor (optha) mahirap yung self medication when it comes to eye medicines . Most eye meds contain steroids that can do more harm than good.

Dati kami pag may sore eyes sige lagay lang ng maxitrol, bilis mag-effect. Hindi naman inisip yung possible steroid content. Recently I thought I had sore eyes, but ever since I had lasik I didn't want to just put anything in my eyes. So I asked American Eye Center what eye med to use. Dun ko lang nalaman na may iba-iba palang strains ang sore eyes virus and medication is prescribed depending on the strain you have. Dapat talaga patingin muna sa doctor bago maglagay ng kung anong gamot.

As far as I know sore eyes is viral so there is really no cure you just have to wait it out until it dies down. the medicine they prescribe to you is just to relieve the pain, itching etc.

You're right on that dasaint.

Viral Conjunctivitis or more commonly known as Sore Eyes is a viral infection and is self limiting.
Infection of this kind will subside and eventually disappear in 1 to 2 weeks even without eyedrop medications

You just need anti-bacterial eyedrop medication to prevent it from leading to a secondary bacterial infection...(I recommend Vigamox on this).

If you're uncomfortable with it's symptoms : itching, redness and inflammation. You can use an antibacterial/steroid combination to address this symptoms (I recommend Tobradex or Maxitrol in this category)

If you don't want to use an eyedrop with a steroid content (btw, steroid won't make you blind right away ,it would have an effect on your eye's pressure on prolong use that can lead to a condition called glaucoma), you can use an anti-allergy eyedrop to address the itching and redness (I recommend Patanol in this category).

got uncle, auntie, and cousins just recently got soreyes (lahat sila sa bahay). Tobradex and Maxitrol didn't work for them. I gave them yun chinese eyedrop. It worked naman. siguro depende sa tao. i dont think they consulted an optha. 1-1/2 week silang may sore eyes nun hehehe...

Bacause it's a viral infection...so it really won't treat their sore eyes..Tobradex and Maxitrol would just relieve the signs and symptoms of their sore eyes like redness, itching and inflammation.

@ qt_arvin: good point sir! indeed viral is self-limiting based on the immuno-resonse of the infected person. all medz, steriod or otherwise are merely for the treatment of the symptoms.

You're right. Visine is different from Vaseline hehe.

Anyway, Visine and Eye Mo are what we call Decongestants.
They would just relieve redness in your eyes but it would NOT treat infections and would not help relieve itchiness and soreness.

Yes, maxitrol will relieve itchiness because of it's steroid content.
